Seven months after scandalous sex charges exploded over the hilltop campus of Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C., Maclean’s has learned that SFU president John Stubbs will be departing. Stubbs, who previously served as president of Trent University in Peterborough, Ont., took over Simon Fraser in September, 1993. His five-year contract with the university runs until next August, and last March the university offered him a second five-year term. In May, however, an undergraduate student accused the male coach of Simon Fraser’s championship-winning swim team of sexual harassment. Stubbs fired the coach. Later disclosures, revealing that it was the student who had stalked the coach, called that judgment into question. Stubbs acknowledged that he had known about, but disregarded, information that cleared the coach’s name. Simon Fraser was eventually obliged to reinstate the coach in July. By then, Stubbs had asked for and received a medical leave, pleading depression. The leave expires at year’s end.

In September, acting president Jack Blaney revealed that Stubbs had breached SFU policy in approving disciplinary actions against several other university staff and faculty for sexual harassment. Maclean’s has now learned that at a recent meeting the Simon Fraser board confirmed that Stubbs would not be returning as president. In recent weeks, the tenured 54-year-old historian has been working on campus, researching a book, while his lawyers negotiate the terms under which the university will release him from the remainder of his contract. The settlement is expected to be approved early in the new year.
